Envisioning an end to the housing crisis

The Housing Our Future forum in Milton helped envision an end to the housing crisis.

See videos from Dan Giampuzzi and Ryan Bolton as well as the list of the panelists from the community agencies across Halton, who contributed to the forum. Finally, flip your closet to support the 3rd Milton Fashionista Flip.

Community collaboration

MTH’s 2nd Housing Our Future forum demonstrated the breadth of community agencies working together to bring relief for those affected by a housing crisis across the Halton Region.

“There remains a severe shortage of rental properties in Halton.”

  • Melissa Hiller, Halton Women’s Place
  • Brenda Hadju, Executive Director, Food for Life
  • Jayne Hartley, Supervisor, Housing Services, Region of Halton
  • Alyssa Gremmen, Program Manager POSSE Project
  • Arnold Krever, Older Adult Advisory Committee, Region of Halton
  • Nancy Comber, Community Living North Halton
  • Jason Palmer, MTH Case Manager
  • Dan Giampuzzi, landlord

Introducing the forum, MTH Executive Director, Donna Danielli  shares the news that we will soon have an 8th graduate and 9 units now secured. In just over 4 years MTH has impacted many individuals and families in the Milton community.

Here Dan Giampuzzi explains his important role as one of MTH’s landlords

“This is my paying it forward”

Here is the poem read by an emotional Sherrie

When things go wrong as they sometimes will
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill
When the funds are low and the debts are high
And you want to smile but you have to sigh
When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
Life is weird with its twists and turns
As every one of us sometimes learns
And many a failure turns about
When you might have won, if you stuck it out
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow
You may succeed with one more go
Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are
It may be near when it seems so far
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit

Ryan Bolton – for the first time meeting those inspired by his original Champion article ‘Homelessness on the Rise’ to start MTH

John Gregory challenged the audience to

  1. Tell someone why this is important
  2. Become a social ambassador
  3. Offer to help, learning how your skills, time and energy can benefit someone living in a housing crisis in our community

Thanks to Faith United who provided the AV and refreshments at the forum. Look out for the poverty/ housing series next week in the Canadian Champion.

If you don’t wear it – share it
